A teenage Tasmanian P-plater will be without his pride and joy for the rest of the month, after a burnout was performed in his Ford Falcon just days after he received his provisional licence.

The AU Falcon was allegedly detected by Tasmania Police performing a burnout on Richmond Road in the Hobart suburb of Cambridge on Saturday, February 1.

Police subsequently clamped the car for 28 days, but its 17-year-old owner is yet to be charged, as “investigations are ongoing in relation to the identity of the person driving the vehicle at the time of the incident”.

In Tasmania, police have the power to clamp a vehicle which has been involved in reckless or dangerous driving, “street racing or time trials”, making unnecessary and unreasonable noise, as well as other driving-related offences.

Second offences can lead to vehicles being clamped or confiscated for three or more months.

The penalty can also apply regardless of whether the driver of the vehicle was its owner.

Tasmania Police urges anyone who witnesses hooning or anti-social behaviour on the Apple Isle to call police on 131 444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or visiting its website.
