Volvo’s last wagon in Australia hits the end of the road

The Volvo V60 Cross Country crossover wagon and the related S60 sedan will be discontinued in Australia once current stocks are exhausted, the brand’s local boss has confirmed.

Volvo Car Australia managing director Stephen Connor confirmed with CarExpert the brand’s mid-sized sedan and wagon options are now only available while stocks last, and are anticipated to be all gone by mid-year.

“Volumes of these models currently in our retailer network will be the last of these models. S60 and V60 new car stock will be sold by the end of June 2025 or sooner,” Mr Connor said.

CarExpert understands low sales has contributed to the demise of the 60 Series passenger models, with the S60 and V60 only contributing 153 new registrations each (306 total) for the entire 2024 calendar year.

For reference, the related XC60 SUV managed 1905 new registrations last year, though it has an admittedly wider range of powertrain and trim variants.

Volvo Car Australia isn’t completely giving up on passenger vehicles though, with the upcoming ES90 electric liftback due in the latter stages of 2025. Its S90 predecessor hasn’t been sold in Australia since 2018, though remains on sale in other parts of the world.

It’s yet another hit to the passenger vehicle segment in Australia, which continues to shrink in both volume as well as entrants. Within the S60 and V60’s premium mid-sized segment, the Audi A4, BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, Jaguar XE, Peugeot 508, and Volkswagen Arteon have been discontinued locally in the past 12-18 months.

The 60 Series range will thus be trimmed down solely to the XC60 for the time being, which later this year will receive a mild facelift and technology upgrade. It’s understood the S60 and V60 will see similar updates at some point for overseas markets.

Next year the first all-electric 60 Series model will launch in the form of the new EX60 SUV, recently teased ahead of an imminent reveal likely scheduled for later this year.

Mr Connor’s confirmation of the S60 and V60 Cross Country’s demise comes off the heels of the C40 Recharge being discontinued in Australia as well, despite the brand previously indicated the updated and renamed EC40 would be arriving in local showrooms in the first half of 2025.

Existing Volvo owners will soon be able to upgrade their older models to the latest software interface. Volvo Australia has confirmed some 35,000 local owners will get the new UX via an over-the-air update later this year.
