Volkswagen offers early-bird electric SUV buyers free home charger

Volkswagen Australia is offering a complimentary home charger with its new ID.4 and ID.5 mid-size electric SUVs, but you’ll need to be quick to get one.

The first 500 buyers of the ID.4 Pro and ID.5 GTX will receive a free 7kW home charger, which includes the cost of installation – valued by the carmaker at $1899.

For context, the ID.4 Pro has a 77kWh battery, with the 7kW charger providing a theoretical 0-100 per cent charge time of 11 hours. Charging the ID.5 GTX’s 79kWh battery from empty, meantime, will take just over 11 hours.

Volkswagen says this is a launch-only offer, and won’t be repeated once the allocation of 500 chargers runs out.

First Australian customer deliveries of both the ID.4 and ID.5 are due to begin in mid-2025, following several delays for the long-awaited local launch of the German carmaker’s first EVs.

The ID.4 was first released in Europe in late 2020 and in North America in 2021, and has since been updated.

The rear-wheel drive ID.4 Pro is priced from $59,990 before on-road costs, while the all-wheel drive ID.5 GTX starts from $72,990 before on-roads.

Volkswagen claims a driving range of 544km for the ID.4 Pro and 528km for the ID.5 GTX, both against the WLTP lab test cycle.

It’s expected Volkswagen will launch an ID.4 GTX and ID.5 Pro in Australia at a later stage.
