Victoria Police has caught a learner driver involved in a high-speed street race in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, driving without a supervisor at well above the legal limit.
Members of the Casey Highway Patrol unit patrolling Thompsons Road in Cranbourne North spotted two drivers allegedly racing each other at around 1:00am on Sunday.
Police say one of the cars, a seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf R, was clocked at exactly 200km/h – 120km/h over the road’s posted speed limit. The driver then allegedly turned his headlights off and fled the scene.
Officers were able to locate the driver – an 18-year-old Clyde North man – exiting his vehicle in a nearby street. His Golf R was impounded for 30 days for $1138.10.

Police also say he’ll likely be charged on summons with “numerous offences including speeding, participate in unlawful street race, unaccompanied learner and fail to drive with headlights at night”.
Interestingly, while Victorian probationary licence holders cannot legally drive the seventh-generation Golf R, learner drivers can – as long as they are supervised by a fully licensed driver.
Police suggest the Golf R, which judging by the image provided may have been modified, could also belong to the 18-year-old. That means he wouldn’t be allowed to drive it after graduating to his probationary licence.
While the Golf R driver was caught, authorities have yet to identify the second driver.
