Tesla’s Australian sales slump continues into 2025

Tesla deliveries fell year-over-year for yet another month in January 2025, but it’s not the brand’s oldest model that’s dragging it down.

According to data from the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), Model Y deliveries were up by 21.1 per cent over January 2024 to 465 examples, but the Model 3 slumped by 62.1 per cent to 274 deliveries.

All up, Tesla deliveries were down by 33.2 per cent over the same period last year.

  • Model 3

The Model 3 drop is somewhat surprising given deliveries of the updated sedan began in earnest last January and were almost immediately impacted by a stop-sale.

That saw overall Model 3 deliveries for January 2024 slump by 75.3 per cent.

Despite a fairly significant update, the Model 3 appears to be struggling. It remains to be seen whether it was toppled in January by rivals such as the BYD Seal, as the monthly VFACTS sales report isn’t yet available.

However, BYD delivered 589 Seals in January 2024 and 412 examples in December, which makes this a very real possibility.

  • Pre-update Model Y

It also remains to be seen whether the Model Y, Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV), will receive a substantial bump in sales this year with the launch of the updated model.

Deliveries of the updated Model Y are expected to begin in May.

January 2025’s figures are more bad news for Tesla, which delivered fewer than 40,000 vehicles in Australia in 2024 as a result of sales declining across nine months in the year – and in spite of some aggressive discounting plus a refreshed Model 3.

Overall, Model Y deliveries slumped by 26.1 per cent, while the Model 3 dropped by only 1.5 per cent last year.

  • Updated Model Y

Tesla and Polestar are among the few brands that don’t report their sales to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) for publish in VFACTS.

Polestar reported 82 deliveries in January 2025, down 45.33 per cent on January 2024’s tally.

Despite 61 examples of the new Polestar 4 being delivered – plus an insignificant two examples of the Polestar 3 – a slump of 87.3 per cent for the Polestar 2 dragged it down.

Just 19 Polestar 2s were delivered in January 2025.
