Tesla sales drop again in another rocky month for EV brand

After dropping in January, Tesla sales fell once again in February as the brand’s 2025 gets off to a poor start.

Compared to last February, Tesla deliveries were down 71.9 per cent with 1592 vehicles delivered last month.

The results were published by the Electric Vehicle Council ahead of tomorrow’s monthly VFACTS industry sales report published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), to which Tesla (and Polestar) no longer supply their delivery figures.

While the Model Y’s 55.4 per cent slump to 924 deliveries is perhaps not surprising – given deliveries of an updated model are due to begin in May – the Model 3 had another disappointing month despite receiving an extensive update early last year.

Deliveries of the electric sedan were down 81.4 per cent to 668 examples.

So far this year, Tesla deliveries are down 65.6 per cent to 2331 vehicles, with the Model Y down 43.4 per cent on January-February 2024 and the Model 3 down 78.2 per cent.

With 739 deliveries, January was Tesla’s worst month in Australia since July 2023 when it delivered just four vehicles – though its delivery schedule was far less frequent then.

Last year, Tesla delivered fewer than 40,000 vehicles in Australia as a result of sales declining across nine months in the year, even after aggressive discounting plus the launch of the refreshed Model 3.

Polestar also reports its figures to the Electric Vehicle Council, and recorded an increase of 11.6 per cent on last February to 125 deliveries, thanks to the arrival of the Polestar 3 and 4 SUVs.

However, it’s down 21 per cent on January-February 2024 with a total of 207 deliveries.

There are a handful of other brands that don’t report their figures in VFACTS, at least not yet. These include Deepal, Ineos, Mahindra, Xpeng and Zeekr. It remains to be seen whether any of these brands will feature in the February 2025 VFACTS report, set to be published tomorrow.
