After a slow start to 2025, the Tesla Model Y more than doubled its sales in September compared to the smae month last year, putting it back ahead of 2024 in terms of year-to-date (YTD) sales and retaining its position as Australia’s top-selling electric vehicle (EV) and favourite mid-size electric SUV.
New sales data from the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) has revealed that 3927 new Model Y vehicles were registered in Australia last month, up 162.15 per cent on September 2024 (1498 units). YTD, the Model Y has now found 17,237 new homes, up 3.23 per cent on the January-September 2024 period (16,697).
No doubt this will help the Tesla extend its lead over the BYD Sealion 7, which has been a strong second in the EV (and mid-size electric SUV) sales race so far this year, and has even beat out the Model Y in a couple of monthly sales tallies. We’ll know more when VFACTS industry figures are released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) later today.

The related Tesla Model 3 electric sedan isn’t quite enjoying the same success, with 736 sales for the month being down 36.06 per cent on September 2024 (1151), and it’s currently 61.46 down YTD.
Another mid-size electric SUV, the distinctively styled Polestar 4, has quickly become the Chinese-owned Swedish brand’s most popular model in Australia, with 151 registrations in September contributing to a YTD tally of 1033 units in its first full year on sale.
That puts it ahead of the ageing Polestar 2 electric fastback (661 units, down 48.64 per cent) and the Polestar 3 large electric SUV (173 units). Polestar’s YTD tally is now sitting at 1867 units, up 40.48 per cent on the January-September period in 2024.
Worth noting is the fact that Polestar announced model year 2026 (MY26) updates for the Polestar 2 last month, ahead of first deliveries in November. It’s not uncommon for a model’s monthly sales numbers to shift dramatically between product updates.
