Tesla Model Y, Model 3 recalled

Tesla has recalled 297 examples of the Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan in Australia, due to a fault which could result in a loss of power-assisted steering.

“Due to a software issue, the Electronic Power Assist Steering system (EPAS) may not operate as intended,” the carmaker said in its recall notice.

“This may result in a loss of power steering assist and could require greater steering effort from the driver.

“A loss of power steering assist driving may increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

  • A total of 297 vehicles built between 2022 and 2023 are affected
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list is attached here
  • The recall notice is attached here

It’s understood the recall is related to similar faults being reported in the US, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there last year reporting it had received almost 2400 complaints.

If you own an affected Model Y or Model 3, Tesla will roll out a vehicle software update, meaning you don’t have to visit a service centre.

The software release that contains the remedy will be deployed over-the-air to all affected vehicles.

Vehicles running software version 2023.38.4 or later aren’t subject to this fault.
