Tesla adds Grok AI assistant to its vehicles

Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla has added Grok Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a new in-car conversational AI assistant – to all cars sold or delivered in the US from July 12, 2025.

According to Tesla, “Grok is designed to deliver accurate and insightful responses to questions of a wide range” and, in North America, it’s now available in the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck.

It may be also be offered in older vehicles in future, via over-the-air software updates.

Grok AI software was developed by xAI – formed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2023 – and is most prominent on the ‘X’ social media platform, which is owned by xAI and therefore Mr Musk.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

On X, Grok supplies fact-checking responses to content and ‘community notes’ – but questions remain over its objectivity and accuracy, following a recent apology from the company after Grok praised Adolf Hitler, according to The Guardian.

Tesla Australia is yet to confirm whether Grok AI will be available in its vehicles here, and if so when – or whether the same US criteria will need to be met by cars for them to receive it here.

“Grok AI has only been released in the US. Tesla Australia is not able to make comment on future tech updates,’ it told CarExpert today.

To run Grok, Tesla vehicles in the US must be fitted with an AMD processor, run vehicle software version 2025.26 and have Wi-Fi connectivity.

Owners can check which processor their Tesla uses via the vehicle menu, under ‘Controls’, then ‘Software’ and ‘Additional Vehicle Information’.

An X account is, of course, not needed to use Grok in a Tesla vehicle – and nor does Grok itself require an account – however, Grok does need the ‘Premium Connectivity’ feature or a stable Wi-Fi connection to function.

It will also not replace Tesla’s voice command system, which uses Apple’s Siri for a wide range of functions, but it could do so in future as Mr Musk and his companies continue to develop Grok.

Tesla recently updated the Model Y in Australia – where the mid-size electric SUV remained the best-selling EV during the first six months of 2025 – with a range of improvements including revised exterior styling, a longer driving range and six extra exterior paint colours.
