Suzuki Jimny five-door sold out for more than three years after order frenzy in Japan

The Suzuki Jimny’s popularity appears to know no bounds, even six years after the current-generation pint-sized 4×4 was launched.

That’s extended to Japan, where the five-door Suzuki Jimny Nomade – known here as the Jimny XL – went on sale earlier this week, only for orders to be paused soon after due to overwhelming demand.

Between January 30 and February 2, Suzuki Japan received approximately 50,000 orders for the Jimny Nomade, equivalent to more than 40 months of supply due to the company’s restriction of 1200 examples per month.

It may seem curious as Suzuki is a Japanese company, but five-door Jimnys are built exclusively in India, unlike three-door versions that are produced only in Japan for Australia.

“We will make company-wide efforts to resume orders as soon as possible, so we ask for your patience for a little while longer,” Suzuki Japan said in a media statement.

“In addition, we will continue to make efforts to deliver vehicles that have already been ordered as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize to customers who are considering or placing orders for the vehicle, for any inconvenience caused.

“In addition, due to the suspension of order acceptance, advance exhibitions and exhibitions at events scheduled at shopping malls nationwide will also be canceled.”

It’s not yet known whether this will impact Australian customers waiting for a Jimny XL, since the same production facility produces five-door Jimny vehicles for both ours and the Japanese markets.

CarExpert has contacted Suzuki Australia for comment.

Australian Jimny buyers have experienced similar wait times in the past, with three-door automatic Jimny orders stretching to highs of three years prior to the arrival of the five-door, as COVID-related supply issues impacted production.
