Subaru WRX: STI-tuned manual flagship revealed

Subaru Australia has unveiled its latest addition to the WRX lineup, and while it’s fitted with unique STI components and a manual gearbox there doesn’t appear to be any extra power under the bonnet.

The Subaru WRX tS Spec B is a new flagship for the range, due here during 2025, and it brings a six-speed manual transmission to the previously continuously variable transmission (CVT)-only tS trim.

You’d be hard-pressed to find differences between this and last year’s limited-run WRX Club Spec SE though, which was also a manual-only edition.

The Spec B has brought back its 19-inch matte grey alloy wheels, STI rear wing, Recaro seats, and iconic WR Blue paint job – just with the addition of gold-coloured Brembo brake calipers.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

The reveal follows a teaser video published yesterday on Subaru Australia’s social media channels, while the Japanese brand says “full specifications will be revealed soon”.

What is known is that the Spec B will retain the same 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine found across the rest of the WRX range, with no extra power or torque expected.

That engine produces up to 202kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and all WRX models come standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

Shown in promotional content are also Subaru’s optional STI Performance Mufflers – a circa-$2500 addition for any WRX variant.

That means the only performance enhancements for the Spec B are its Brembo brakes, but it still benefits from tS-specific gear over the Club Spec’s mid-range alignment.

The main advantage with that is it receives electronically controlled suspension dampers, though it’s not clear if they’ve been tuned by STI as was the case in the Club Spec.

It’s also not yet known if the Spec B will be a limited-edition model or a permanent addition to the top of the WRX lineup.

Interestingly, the Spec B is nearly identical to the limited-edition WRX Todoroki available in New Zealand – the only difference is that model has red brake calipers instead of gold.

Subaru has yet to confirm pricing for the WRX Spec B, though we’d expect it to carry a premium over the top-spec tS auto which is priced at $59,790 before on-roads.

The local WRX lineup opens at $47,490 before on-roads for the base manual, with the most expensive manual being the RS at $52,990 before on-roads. The Club Spec SE was priced at just $500 less than that.

In any case, it’s the closest we’ve come to a new WRX STI in Australia since the demise of Subaru’s full-fat performance model in 2022.

Registrations of interest for the WRX tS Spec B are now open on Subaru Australia’s website.
