Renault reveals funky, futuristic family of vans, but Australian plans unclear

It’s a Renault Trafic, but it doesn’t look like any Renault Trafic before it.

Renault has revealed a new electric Trafic van, alongside the new Estafette and Goelette, forming a trio of new battery-electric E-Tech commercial vehicles based on a new skateboard platform and software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture.

The trio was developed in collaboration with Flexis, an independent company founded by Renault Group, Volvo Group, and CMA CGM Group.

  • Trafic E-Tech

Renault claims the new commercial vehicles have high levels of safety, performance, connectivity, as well as “virtually infinite possibilities for customisation”.

They’ll be built in France and go on sale in Europe from 2026. However, it’s unclear what the plans are for these vehicles in Australia.

The company has yet to show off what the interiors of these new delivery vans will look like, or provide any details about their electric powertrains.

The new, fourth-generation Trafic isn’t the first Trafic to feature electric power – such an option already exists in Europe with the current model – but it looks unlike any generation of the nameplate that first debuted in 1980.

There’s a more angular look to the new Trafic E-Tech, with a short front overhang and slim headlights flanking a black bar with illuminated lines and the French brand’s logo.

Prominent creasing can be seen down the side of the van, while at the rear there are the vertical tail-lights expected of a van but with intricate LED internals. There are also asymmetrical barn doors.

Renault claims the Trafic E-Tech has a turning circle equivalent to that of a Clio hatch, while the van is less than 1.9m tall so it can easily access underground car parks.

The Goelette and Estafette, meantime, dust off nameplates not used by Renault since 1966 and 1980 respectively.

  • Goelette E-Tech

Like the new Trafic, they feature similarly tiered front-end styling with small lighting units and illuminated Renault logos.

The Goelette E-Tech will be offered as either a basic cab/chassis, or with a box or tipper on the back.

Renault says the rear section has no specific equipment, benign designed for a “virtually infinite range of fittings and customised features”.

The Estafette E-Tech is a tall, boxy van, measuring 5.27m long, 1.92m wide but 2.6m tall, thereby allowing someone 1.9m tall to move around its interior easily.

  • Estafette E-Tech

It features running boards on both sides, while at the back there’s a single-piece roller shutter door.

Renault currently offers electric versions of its small Kangoo, mid-sized Traffic and large Master vans in Europe, though only the Kangoo E-Tech is available here.

While the electric van market in Australia is smaller than in Europe, you can still buy such vehicles from the likes of Ford, LDV, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and Volkswagen.
