The Kia Soul is dead. So, too, it appears, is the boxy compact.
Nissan dropped the Cube years ago. Scion no longer exists, and nor does the xB.
If we don’t count larger SUVs with boxy shapes — and for this purposes of this QOTD, I don’t — there are really no small boxy compacts left. Well, OK, there’s one — the oft-forgotten Hyundai Venue. Some might put Mini Coopers in his category, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 arguably qualifies.
I’ve never owned a boxy compact, but I know folks who have. I’ve also tested just about every one of these things. They all had one thing in common — efficient use of space. And most were priced reasonably.
Which makes it hard for me to understand why they’re all gone. Yes, the styling wasn’t sexy and the price point tended to give the world an idea of the size of you bank account, but for young urbanites, empty nesters, and some young families, they made sense as a use case.
So, will you miss these vehicles? Will some automakers jump back into the segment soon? Which was the best of these cars?
Sound off below.
