Matt P. brought us some scary news for race fans today — New Jersey’s Old Bridge racetrack is under threat.
This follows a change of ownership at the historic Willow Springs across the country in California. There was concern that the facility would be demolished, though it appears the new owners will renovate the place — that might make the track less accessible to those with shallow pockets but at least it will stay a racetrack.
I also occasionally hear rumblings that the famous Laguna Seca facility is under attack from NIMBY neighbors.
Now, Willow Springs and Laguna Seca may manage to stick around, but it always seems like these older tracks, especially ones less famous than Laguna Seca, are under attack by outside forces.
How can race fans keep these places going? Do you build an economy around the track, a la Road America in Wisconsin? Work with local politicians? Find deep-pocketed benefactors who love racing?
