Polestar enters another state in Australian retail expansion

Polestar has arrived in Adelaide, opening the doors to its first South Australian dealership as part of a wider retail expansion.

Operated by the Solitaire Automotive Group, Polestar Adelaide is said to debut “on the back of significant demand from South Australian buyers to experience Polestar’s range of electric cars”.

“South Australian electric car buyers have been vocal in their calls to secure a Polestar retail location, and we’re very excited to be delivering,” said Scott Maynard, managing director for Polestar Australia.

The new dealership is located on Glen Osmond Road in the inner southern Adelaide suburb of Parkside.

Polestar says the new Adelaide location is part of the company’s “transition [to] a more active retail model”, which will see the Geely-owned brand partner with dealer partners around the country.

In November, Mr Maynard confirmed the brand would double its retail presence in 2025 with seven new sites.

The new Adelaide location joins Chadstone, Port Melbourne, Artarmon, Alexandria, Penrith, Brisbane, and Perth in Polestar’s national network.

Polestar joins a number of other brands distributed by the Solitaire Automotive Group, including Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, Cupra, Jaguar Land Rover, Maserati, Volkswagen and Volvo.

In 2024 Polestar registered 1713 new vehicles in Australia, down 30.3 per cent on the year prior. However, the new 3 and 4 SUVs only started hitting Australian driveways in the latter stages of the year.

This year will be the first year that Polestar has a full three-car range, with the Porsche Taycan-rivalling Polestar 5 due to launch globally at some point this year, and first Australian deliveries commencing late in 2025 or early in 2026.

Mr Maynard told CarExpert at the launch of the Polestar 4 in November that he believes the brand’s local division will exceed even internal expectations.

“We’ve certainly got internal targets [for 2025], but I personally think that we’re probably going to do a little bit better than what we’re internally projecting,” Mr Maynard said.

“I think a lot of that comes down to expectation of the market, and so many people have found it really difficult to forecast what EVs will do – it was forecasted to be 100 per cent of what we drive within five years, and those expectations are obviously cooling pretty quickly, and I don’t think they were ever right.

“The EV space we’re playing in is a quieter space, it’s a premium spot, and we’re really confident that as more and more buyers switch to EV – customers that have traditionally bought premium ICE-powered vehicles [who] want a sustainable alternative to that – we’ll continue to see growth in our brand, and we’re pretty excited about that.”
