A quintessentially 1980s television commercial for the Camaro said, “The legendary Chevy Camaro. You’ve always hoped someday you could afford one. Welcome to someday.” A $2,400 incentive was being offered, including $500 cash back. The fine print said that you had to take retail delivery from dealer stock between October 27 and December 7, 1988.
If you missed your chance to pick up a new third-generation Camaro, you’re in luck as there’s a near-new example up for grabs in ClassicCars.com with your name on it. The Pick of the Day is a low-mileage 1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z listed for sale by a private seller in South Jordan, Utah.
“This vehicle has been garaged and pampered,” the seller says. “The interior and exterior are in very good condition.” The odometer shows just 27,828 miles.
The IROC-Z, previously a performance package on the Z28, became its own trim level in 1989. Along with that, there were some changes to the chassis engineering that year that included a retuned suspension and larger stabilizer bars—all the more reason why Chevrolet was more confident than ever in the car’s performance capabilities.
To that end, a magazine ad for the 1989 Camaro said, “This year, we at Chevrolet are going to prove something very important. We’re going to prove that your faith in American ingenuity, technology and skill has not been misplaced. You’ll discover that Chevrolet is taking charge in providing better, more exciting, affordable products. Whether or not we become your next car, we want to make you proud that we are America’s car.”
Originality abounds with this F-body, right down to the Delco AM/FM cassette radio with built-in equalizer. The cockpit is as fresh as one would expect for a 27,000-mile car, offering power windows, bucket seats, embroidered floor mats, and air conditioning.
Power comes from a 220-horsepower 305ci V8 mated to a console-shifted four-speed automatic transmission. The seller says that a tune-up was performed recently, and the tires have been replaced, so this IROC is ready to rock and roll.
The car’s license plate says it all: 80S ROC. Yeah, the 1980s did rock! And what better car to celebrate the decade with than an unmodified, low-mileage muscle car? Pick your favorite cassette and get ready for the open road.
