Pick of the Day: 1940 Ford Deluxe

Are you a Ford fan or a Chevy fan? With this car, you can be both.

The Pick of the Day is a 1940 Ford two-door sedan listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Tustin, California. (Click the link to view the listing)

The car’s aqua-colored exterior evokes a vibe of tropical waters … a fitting shade for a car that would be right at home cruising along the California beachfront. Maybe you can incorporate a Pacific Coast Highway scenic drive into your purchase plans!

The listing outlines many of the exterior, interior and mechanical updates that were incorporated when the so-called “resto-rod” treatment took place. The car reportedly started out life in Deluxe trim level, and the seller states that it has steel components for the body, front fenders, doors, running boards and trunk. The rear fenders are made of fiberglass composite, and the front and rear brightwork has of course been redone.

On the interior, amenities include bucket seat upholstered in gray vinyl with cloth inserts, billet gauges with VDO instrumentation, a Sony audio system and three-point seat belts for front passengers. Another big draw is the fact that the car has a Vintage Air climate-control system, so it’s ready for four-season cruising.

A magazine advertisement for the 1940 Ford models said, “Announcing the new Ford cars for 1940 – with 22 important improvements.” Those improvements are then spelled out in bullets at the bottom of the sheet. Among them: New controlled ventilation, more leg room, quieter operation, “floating edge” seat cushions, improved brake drums, new instrument panel and a battery condition indicator. Talk about advanced!

Here’s where the General Motors fans can start to get excited: Under the hood is a Chevrolet-sourced 350ci small-block V8. It is fed via a four-barrel carburetor and comes with upgrades including an Edelbrock intake manifold, chrome engine dressing, billet fan and belt drives, an electric cooling fan and ceramic-coated headers. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Turbo 350 three-speed automatic transmission and a Ford nine-inch differential.

With looks by Ford and power by Chevy, the car does a nice job of blending them together – and it adds a few niceties like air conditioning into the mix. You’d be hard-pressed to build a car like this from the ground-up for a price like the seller is asking ($32,000, as of the time of this writing). Start planning your Pacific coast road trip straight away!
