P-plater in Ford Ranger nicked for 165km/h blast with loaded trailer

It wasn’t a Good Friday for the driver of a Ford Ranger whose Easter camping trip was abruptly cut short when he was nabbed travelling at 165km/h at the start of the long weekend.

The black late-model Ranger was intercepted by Mansfield Highway Patrol on the Maroondah Highway in Merton, Victoria, around 9:30am last Friday morning.

If travelling at least 65km/h over the limit wasn’t bad enough, the 26-year-old provisional licence holder from Bayswater in Melbourne was overtaking multiple vehicles at the time – with a box trailer load of camping gear in tow.

After being spoken to by police at the scene following a high-speed intercept, the green P-plater will be charged with speed-related offences and is expected to face court at a later date.

A notice to surrender the vehicle for impoundment was also issued, resulting in significant impound costs and the vehicle being off the road for 30 days.

Victoria Police continues to conduct speed enforcement activities as part of Operation Compass.

With the Anzac Day long weekend looming, Victoria Police said “…this serves as a reminder that police will continue to maintain a visible presence to detect and deter unsafe driving behaviours, ensuring the safety of all road users.”.
