Nvidia’s chips provide processing power for vehicle safety systems, gaming computers, and many other high-intensity tasks, but General Motors will soon rely on them in its manufacturing and autonomous vehicle efforts.
The automaker will use Nvidia’s Omniverse simulation program, which will allow it to rapidly create multiple production simulations and identify efficiency gaps. The models will also inform future factory designs, giving GM the ability to build the most efficient facility possible out of the gate.
General Motors and Nvidia will also work together on autonomous vehicle functions, including Super Cruise and advanced driver-assistance tech. Nvidia’s Drive AGX chips already provide processing power for several other automakers, including Volvo, BYD, and Mercedes-Benz.
Nvidia has been in the news frequently in recent times. Earlier this week, it announced a new deal with Magna International, a giant automotive supplier. The pair will work together on improving the speed and accuracy of advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving features.
The project will use the same Drive AGX chip and focus on making autonomous vehicles’ behavior as close to that of human as possible. Magna Electronics VP of technology strategy, Steven Jenkins, said, “What that really means is you shouldn’t feel that you’re in a car and you’re having someone drive you. That will be partially because you’ll be able to communicate with this thing properly. It will be able to help you and guide you and guide you along your route. But it will also be very robust. It won’t turn off suddenly, if the weather gets bad or it won’t turn off suddenly, if it can’t understand the scenario, it will be on for the long term. So it will be as robust as a person.”
