New Polestar 7 will be a sleeker Volvo EX30 built in Europe

Swedish-Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Polestar has confirmed it will produce an all-new compact luxury electric SUV called the Polestar 7, a possible indirect successor to the Polestar 2 fastback but built in Europe rather than China to avoid import tariffs.

Expected to be based on the same Geely SEA platform architecture as the larger Polestar 4, as well as the Volvo EX30, Smart #3 and Zeekr X, the Polestar 7 will rival the BMW iX1/iX2, Lexus UX300e, Mercedes-Benz EQA and Mini Countryman E.

No launch dates or images have yet been revealed, but the Polestar 7 is expected to go on sale in 2027 and incorporate design cues from the rest of the Polestar model range, including the large 3 and mid-sized 4 electric SUVs.

“Polestar is known for its progressive design, with each car standing out and creating its own buzz – so too will Polestar 7,” said new Polestar head of design, Phillipp Romers.

“It is incredibly exciting to bring Polestar’s design ethos to a new segment. Polestar 7 will be everything our customers expect from us, both in terms of design and performance.”

Powertrains, specifications and pricing details for the Polestar 7 were not announced, but Polestar did say it will transition to a single vehicle platform from the Polestar 7 onwards. Whether the architecture will be new or existing remains to be seen.

That could mean that the upcoming Polestar 5 – a high-performance four-door grand tourer to rival the Porsche Taycan – will be the only model to sit on Polestar’s freshly developed bonded-aluminium platform.

The Polestar 5 will also debut the brand’s 800-volt battery technology, and feature electric motors capable of delivering up to 650kW of power and 900Nm of torque.

The rollout of new nameplates including the 5 and 7 forms part of a strategic shift for Polestar, as the brand targets retail sales volume growth of 30-35 per cent from 2025 to 2027.

Polestar will increase its exposure to markets in Europe and North America, with plans to launch in France this year, before establishing a footprint in Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin American from 2026 onwards.

“We are building on the strong Polestar brand with design and performance at its core. But significant changes are needed to make this well-respected progressive brand a successful and viable business,” explained Polestar CEO, Michael Lohscheller.

Polestar falls under the umbrella of Chinese automotive conglomerate Geely Auto, which also owns Volvo, Lotus, and Smart.

Positioned as a premium EV manufacturer, Polestar sold 1713 vehicles in Australia last year across the 2, 3 and 4 model lines, down 30 per cent on 2023. Prices were cut across the local lineup throughout 2024, with the entry point now sitting at $62,400 before on-road costs for the base Polestar 2.

Order books for the Polestar 5 will open in the latter stages of 2025.
