New battery promises almost 500km of range with 10-minute charge

The world’s largest battery maker is targeting the European electric vehicle (EV) market with a new battery promising 478km of range with just 10 minutes of super-fast charging – an improvement on figures originally quoted back in August 2023.

Chinese battery giant CATL says the Shenxing Pro is the highest-performing lithium iron phosphate battery in Europe, and provides more than 400km of range with just 20 minutes of charge in real-world testing.

CATL has also added some significant safety features, with the battery maintaining power for more than an hour during a thermal runaway event – thereby allowing the driver to find a safe area to pull off the road – while also not producing any flames or smoke in such a scenario.

The new battery offers up to 758km of range with a full charge (based on the European WLTP standard), with a serviceable life of 12 years or one million kilometres.

CATL claims the Shenxing Pro also degrades by just nine per cent after 200,000km.

While the battery is said to be able to deliver up to 830kW, curiously, the company says it can offer a 0-100km time of just 2.5 seconds – but doesn’t provide any specifications about the vehicle capable of hypercar-like acceleration.

The Chinese battery company has been open about targeting the European market with the Shenxing Pro, following an €11 billion (AU$19.5 billion) investment in local manufacturing within the bloc.

“With cutting-edge technologies, diverse global operations, proven manufacturing expertise, and a mindset of open collaboration, CATL is committed to being a reliable partner to the European automotive industry,” chief customer officer Libin Tan said at the battery’s launch.

“By combining our advanced capabilities with Europe’s decades-long automotive expertise, we aim to go beyond ‘in Europe, for Europe’ and ultimately ‘of Europe,’ building a greener, smarter and more thriving EV ecosystem that spans from material production, battery making, remanufacturing and recycling to accelerate the region’s energy transition.”
