Move over, baby: Mercedes-Benz working on larger G-Wagen – report

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class range is set to expand, with the company confirming it’s working on a new smaller off-road SUV to slot in under the current model.

Now, a new report from US website CarBuzz claims Mercedes-Benz could also have a larger seven-seat G-Wagen in development.

The German automaker has previously made public its intention to spin off the iconic G-Class as its own sub-brand, with the aim of leveraging the model’s popularity as one of the most sought-after SUVs in the luxury segment.

While a large G-Wagen has yet to be announced, we do know a cabriolet version of the current model is coming, along with the ‘little G’.

Rival Porsche has already confirmed it’s working on a full-size three-row SUV flagship, which will be positioned above the large Cayenne and mid-size Macan in its SUV lineup.

Giving credibility to the unconfirmed report is Mercedes-Benz itself, which recently committed to building V8 and V12 engines into the next decade.

Along with a new “high-tech electrified V8”, the company said it will continue making a V12 for “selected” markets – which is likely to include Middle Eastern countries like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, where the current G-Class is in high demand.

Furthermore, in Europe, Mercedes-Benz recently filed trademark applications for the G600, G700, G800, and G900 badges.

So far, the larger G-Wagen is just an industry rumour – but given recent statements by Mercedes-Benz, the possibility of the company expanding the G-Class lineup to include three derivatives can’t be ruled out.
