Another new MG has been leaked by safety authority Euro NCAP, this time a new large plug-in hybrid SUV.
After Euro NCAP published images of the MG S6 EV mid-size SUV prior to its official reveal, it has now done the same for the MG S9 PHEV – a plug-in hybrid version of the QS already on sale in Australia.
The Euro NCAP safety report also notes the PHEV SUV features a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It also has a third row of seating, unlike PHEV versions of the rival Skoda Kodiaq.

These powertrain details suggest the QS could borrow the setup from the smaller HS Super Hybrid, which mates a 105kW/230Nm turbo 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a 154kW/340Nm electric motor for total system outputs of 220kW and 350Nm.
The HS Super Hybrid uses a 24.7kWh battery for 120km of electric-only range.
The Euro NCAP images don’t reveal any cosmetic differences.
That a PHEV version of the QS was coming was no great surprise – except to those in Europe, where the Kia Sorento rival has never been offered – as CarExpert previously reported MG had filed to trademark the QS PHEV and QS Plug-in Hybrid nameplates late last year.
More recently, in August 2025, MG also filed to protect the QS Super Hybrid nameplate with IP Australia.
Euro NCAP and ANCAP have both released safety ratings for the MG S9 PHEV and QS this week, with the plug-in hybrid and petrol SUVs both undergoing crash testing in Australia and Europe.
Overall, Euro NCAP awarded the MG S9 PHEV five stars, with a score of 84 per cent for adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child occupant protection, 74 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 77 per cent for safety assist.
Sister authority ANCAP gave the petrol QS a five-star rating, with slightly higher scores for each category: 88 per cent, 86 per cent, 76 per cent and 80 per cent, respectively. It noted, however, that child seats aren’t recommended for fitment in the third row due to the absence of top-tether anchor points.
MG launched the QS in Australia midway through 2025, marking the first time it had offered a three-row SUV locally.
A rebadged RX9 from fellow SAIC Motor brand Roewe, the QS has already notched 777 deliveries in Australia this year, pushing it past the rival Nissan Pathfinder (636) and drawing close to the Skoda Kodiaq (1035).
