MG Cyberster vs Rolls-Royce Spectre drag race

by

Kicking our new drag race series off is an all-electric face-off between the MG Cyberster, the fastest car ever sold by MG, and the Rolls-Royce Spectre, the first electric production model ever built by Rolls-Royce.

Big shoutout to MG for helping us cover the cost of putting this event on. It’s incredibly expensive and resource-intensive to do this type of content, so we appreciate their support.

The cars

MG Cyberster

MG has stuck all of its EV knowhow into the Cyberster in an aim to create a stunning convertible electric GT – something we haven’t seen in the industry before.

Unlike other markets where the MG Cyberster is available with two different battery sizes and with either rear- or all-wheel drive, the electric roadster is only sold here in its most powerful – and best-equipped – guise.

That means a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain capable of producing up to 375kW of power and 725Nm of torque.

It also features the largest battery pack available in the global lineup, with a 77kWh unit delivering up to 443km of driving range on the WLTP test cycle.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

While the MG Cyberster is priced at around $115,000 before on-road costs, the Rolls-Royce Spectre starts from $770,000 before on-roads. Realistically, however, once you pay the statutory fees and tick a few option boxes you’re talking about a car with a price tag of at least $1 million.

And, unlike the MG, the Spectre is a coupe with no opening roof.

But it’s also powered by a twin-motor electric drive system, this time with a 102kWh battery and outputs of 430kW and 900Nm. So while it has more power and torque than the MG, it’s limited by its substantial mass, weighing 2890kg – over 900kg more than the MG (1985kg).

The results

The Rolls-Royce put up a good fight, but was ultimately let down by its mass, losing to the MG in each of our drag races.

The results show it’s still incredibly quick, but it was narrowly pipped by the MG in each run.

Vehicle 0-100km/h 80-120km/h 1/4 mile
MG Cyberster 3.40s 2.01s 11.42s @ 189.53km/h
Rolls-Royce Spectre (Wet) 4.24s 2.28s 12.06s @ 189.64km/h
