Mechanics Name the Car Brands With the Best Engines

A strong, durable engine is the key to a long lifespan for a car, and some automakers’ models have better motors than others. Naturally, then, mechanics have seen it all and can offer some firsthand advice on which brands have the best engines.

Auto shop workers at Accurate Automotive in Colorado shared their opinions on the car brands with the strongest engines in a recent social media video. “Toyotas,” one employee said, with another echoing the “Toyota” sentiment.

Others attributed great engines less to one brand and more to one manufacturer overall. “It’s got to be the old-fashioned LS engines,” one mechanic said, referring to General Motors‘ LS-based small-block engines first introduced in 1997. Another mechanic noted that the brands with the best engines are “Probably like Chevy [or] Ford; early Chevy [or] Ford.” Chevrolet is GM’s most successful brand.

According to Consumer Reports and J.D. Power, BMW, Subaru, and Lexus are among the top car brands for 2024 for buyers. The Toyota corporation, long regarded as a maker of durable cars, won nine awards from J.D. Power this year for various models including the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Toyota 4Runner, and Lexus RX. General Motors, meanwhile, won awards for models like the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, and Chevrolet Tahoe.

When finding the right set of wheels for you, consider how long you want to have the car and how much you’ll be willing to fork over in engine repairs as time goes on.
