McLaren driver caught at triple the speed limit while following Porsche escapes

New South Wales Police has confiscated the driver’s licence of a McLaren 720S owner, after he was caught at more than triple the speed limit while racing a Porsche through Sydney.

Just after 7pm on April 9, Botany Bay Highway Patrol officers were conducting speed enforcement on Southern Cross Drive in Mascot when the McLaren approached them at speed.

The McLaren was observed travelling at 206km/h to 214km/h – the latter figure being more than three times above the signposted 70km/h limit.

A Porsche was allegedly observed also travelling at high speed behind the McLaren.

While police caught up to both vehicles, the Porsche was lost in traffic – however the McLaren was stopped in Zetland.

Its 26-year-old driver was charged with driving at a speed dangerous to the public and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.

In addition to suspending and confiscating the man’s licence for a minimum of six months, the McLaren’s number plates were required to be surrendered.

Though New South Wales police officers also have the right to impound vehicles caught excessively speeding, it appears they did not exercise this right.
