Mazda EZ-60: First look inside new Chinese-made EV, EREV large SUV

The interior of the Mazda EZ-60 has been revealed ahead of the big new electrified SUV’s official debut at the Shanghai motor show tomorrow (April 23), while some technical specifications have also been revealed.

Set to be sold outside China as the CX-6e, the EZ-60 is a Chinese-developed battery-electric and extended-range electric (EV and EREV) large SUV from the Japanese brand.

While the exterior, revealed earlier this month, has some design kinship with existing Mazda models, the interior is a radical departure.

There’s a huge 26.45-inch 5K display, effectively serving as both the central touchscreen and a passenger display.

The EZ-60 has no instrument cluster, though there is a head-up display, and also appears to lack much in the way of physical switchgear.

There’s an available 23-speaker sound system that supports Dolby Atmos, while a touchscreen in the rear allows back-seat passengers to adjust climate and entertainment settings.

Mazda has previewed the EZ-60 with a purple and white two-tone interior colourway, matching its purple exterior finish.

The door panels wrap into the dashboard, and contain screens projecting footage from the wing mirror cameras.

As with many EVs, the EZ-60 features flush-fitting door handles and a closed-off upper grille to smooth out airflow and reduce drag.

Interestingly, the EZ-60 also features a spoiler above its fake grille, as well as a flying buttress design for its D-pillar, both presumably for aerodynamic reasons.

Car News China has also published specifications for the EREV version of the EZ-60, though specs for the EV variant have yet to be revealed.

The EREV version incorporates a 72kW 1.5-litre engine serving as a power generator – not a rotary engine, like in the MX-30 R-EV that was never sold in – for a 190kW electric motor.

It features a 31.73kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, good for 160km of electric-only driving range on the CLTC cycle. Total range is yet to be revealed.

Under the skin it’s understood the EZ-60 uses the EPA1 platform architecture developed by Mazda’s Chinese production partner, the state-owned carmaker Changan.

This platform is employed by Mazda for its EZ-6 liftback – to be sold outside China as the Mazda 6e – as well as a clutch of models offered by Changan under both its own brand, as well as the Deepal marque.

That includes the Deepal S07, though Mazda appears to have given the EZ-60 even greater visual differentiation from its Changan cousin than it did with the EZ-6.

The EZ-60 measures 4850mm long, 1935mm wide and 1620mm tall on a 2902mm wheelbase. That makes it 100mm longer, 5mm wider and 5mm taller than the S07, which is close to the Tesla Model Y in size, and closer in overall length to the Toyota Kluger (4966mm) than the top-selling RAV4 (4.6m).

It reportedly has 350 litres of boot space, expanding to 2036L with the rear seats folded; the electric version also has 126L of under-bonnet storage.

The S07 was launched in Australia at the end of 2024, and is available locally with one drivetrain comprising a 160kW/320Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels, and fed by an 80kWh ternary lithium battery.

AC charging tops out at 11kW, while DC fast-charging maxes out at 92kW.

Under the WLTP testing standard, the S07 has a range of 495km. Tipping the scales at 2073kg, the S07 has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.9 seconds.

In China, the Deepal S07 is also available with a smaller 68kWh battery pack, as well as a more powerful 190kW motor.

Buyers there can also opt a range-extended model, which has a 70kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet that fires up to recharge the 19kWh or 32kWh battery when it starts running low. It features a 175kW electric motor.

Like the EZ-6, the EZ-60 will be built in China by the Changan Mazda joint venture, and sold in Europe and other markets around the world.

In Europe, the EZ-6 sedan will be sold as the Mazda 6e, while the EZ-60 is set to be rebadged as the CX-6e on the Continent.

Right-hand drive production has been confirmed for the EZ-6, but Mazda has yet to confirm whether the EZ-6 or EZ-60 will be sold Down Under.

However, Mazda Australia hasn’t ruled out the possibility of releasing the EZ-6 here as a spiritual successor to the long-running Mazda 6, which was axed locally last year.
