Mahindra’s answer to Yaris Cross, CX-3 SUVs coming to Australia

Mahindra is set to launch a third SUV model line in Australia, and the compact XUV 3XO is expected to become its most affordable model in showrooms.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO – a small SUV of similar size to the popular Toyota Yaris Cross and Mazda CX-3 – will make its public debut in Melbourne this weekend, before being sold in Australia “soon”.

Unveiled in India last year, the XUV 3XO rides on the same platform as the KGM (formerly known as SsangYong) Tivoli, which was axed in Australia five years ago.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

Available powertrains for the XUV 3XO in India include two turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engines, or a single 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel.

Given its rivals are almost exclusively petrol-powered in Australia, it’s unlikely we would get the diesel here.

The turbo-petrol engine is offered in two states of tune – producing 82kW/200Nm or 96kW/230Nm – with drive sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, seven-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto), a surround-view camera, climate control and faux leather trim.

Pricing in India starts from 799,000 Rupees and tops out at 1,550,000 Rupees – equivalent to between A$14,970 and $30,000.

The Hyundai Venue is currently Australia’s cheapest SUV, starting from $22,750 before on-road costs. The XUV will slot below the XUV 700 mid-size SUV (priced from $36,990 drive-away) and the Scorpio large off-road SUV (from $41,990 drive-away) in Mahindra’s local range.
