Is Your Car One of The Most or Least Stolen Cars? Here’s The List

Nearly 900,000 car owners fell victim to car theft in the U.S. alone in 2024, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration.

But data shows certain cars are more likely than others to be targets, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently released the numbers for 2024, and if you’re a Chevrolet Camaro fan, you might not like the news.

Most Stolen Models

The Camaro ZL1 and the regular Camaro took home the honors for first and third among most frequently stolen 2022-2024 models. Maybe not the honors you want in a muscle car.

General Motors products altogether account for nine of the top 20 vehicles with the highest theft claim frequencies, though some of the models are basically the same vehicles, just slightly different.

Aside from the Camaro, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 crew cab 4×4 and GMC Sierra 3500 crew cab 4×4 come in sixth and seventh and are essentially the same vehicles under the skin.

The rest of the top 10 most stolen list includes:

  • Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
  • Acura TLX 4WD
  • Chevrolet Camaro
  • GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab 4WD
  • Acura TLX 2WD
  • GMC Sierra 3500 crew cab 4WD
  • Chevrolet Silverado 3500 crew cab 4WD
  • Dodge Durango 4WD
  • Land Rover Range Rover 4WD
  • Ram 1500 crew cab short-wheelbase 4WD

When it comes to the Camaro, IIHS’ Highway Loss Data Institute found the ZL1 theft rate to be 39 times higher than the average for all vehicles, and the normal Camaro to be 13 times higher than the average.

A common way to steal newer models of cars, such as the Camaros, is to clone the car’s keyfob, according to the report.

GM in March 2025 launched a campaign to issue a free software update to Camaro owners to help prevent theft.

The report notes a software update Kia and Hyundai offered owners a few years ago, after some of its cars made headlines for being stolen on a regular basis, seems to have worked well since the car manufacturers have dropped off the top 20 list entirely.

Least Stolen Cars

Electric cars took home the top three spots on the list of least stolen cars, all Tesla models to be specific.

Not only that, but eight of the top 20 least stolen cars were electric models.

The report notes those electric cars “have theft claim frequencies that are more than 85% lower than the all-vehicle average.”

The reason? Garages, most likely.

“As past HLDI studies have noted, electric vehicles are likely to be garaged or parked near buildings to facilitate charging, making them less attractive to thieves,” the report states.

The rest of the top 10 least stolen list includes:

  • Tesla Model 3 4WD
  • Tesla Model Y 4WD
  • Tesla Model 3 2WD
  • Toyota RAV4 Prime 4WD
  • Tesla Model s 4WD
  • Volvo XC90 4WD
  • Volvo XC40 4WD
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • Volkswagen ID.4
  • Subaru Crosstrek 4WD with EyeSight (2024)

Going back to Hyundai, which previously had several cars in the top 20 list of most stolen cars, it looks like things have flipped for the manufacturer, with the Hyundai Elantra hybrid model coming in 20th for least stolen cars.
