Is this mystery BMW sedan the next i4?

A new sedan has popped up on the BMW website in Germany, prompting internet sleuths to grab their nearest tweed hat and pipe.

The unknown CGI sedan appears in videos on the model page for the recently revealed iX3, where it demonstrates various assisted driving technologies available on the new electric SUV.

While the doors and mirrors look similar to the ones we’ve seen on spy photos of the upcoming i3 sedan, the base of the windscreen stretches way further forward.

The new iX3, as well as the upcoming i3, both have a set of narrow double kidney grilles flanked by a pair of wide, blacked out lighting pods.

This sedan, however, features a wide double kidney grille that’s reminiscent of the i8 supercar. At the back there’s a thin pair of tail-lights that share a faint resemblance to the ones on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

These elements have led some to believe this car could be a preview of the next i4. Although, unlike the current i4, this vehicle looks to be a sedan rather than a five-door liftback.

Interestingly, this sedan has production-spec wing mirrors, but the headlights don’t look as though they would pass muster.

It’s also highly likely this vehicle isn’t based on an upcoming BMW. Perhaps it was an earlier design proposal for the Neue Klasse concept.

That, of course, begs the question: why not just existing model or previously unveiled concept car?

What do you think this mystery car is? Is it the new i4, or nothing at all? Let us know in the comments section below.
