Ford built 3,489 Mustangs with the 428 Cobra Jet for the 1970 model year. That’s a decent number, though nothing like 1969’s high of 13,261. Nonetheless, convertibles with the same engine are extremely rare—in fact, between 1968-70, Cobra Jet-powered Mustang convertibles are quite rarer than equivalent Shelbys.
At the Barrett-Jackson 2025 Scottsdale Auction, AutoHunter had the privilege to pore over this 1970 Mustang convertible equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet. Ever notice how contemporary competitors offered a performance model (‘Cuda, Firebird 400, Challenger R/T, Camaro SS) available as a convertible? Yet Ford did not offer a Mach I convertible, but we can see the seller or previous owner added the Mach I grille to this car—it looks fantastic.
Ditto the Shaker hood scoop, which would make this Mustang one of 33 built. But Ford offered two versions of the Cobra Jet, one with the Shaker (“R” in the VIN) and one without (“Q”). The car in question was built as a Q-code Mustang, so it’s one of 14; of those, nine featured an automatic transmission. At the Barrett-Jackson 2025 Scottsdale Auction, this exact vehicle sold for an astounding $396,000 including fees.
