GM Promises Voided Warranties for Corvette ZR1 Flippers

Here we are. We’re really doing this again. General Motors is threatening Corvette ZR1 buyers with a voided warranty if they flip the car within one year of their purchase. It’s the same approach the automaker took with the Z06, with the company requiring buyers to sign a document stating that if they “sell, or otherwise transfer ownership” of the car within the first year, most of the car’s warranties are forfeited.

GM confirmed the letter’s authenticity to The Drive. The document also states that the E-Ray and Z06 cannot be sold within six months of the initial sale. It also outlines two specific consequences for buyers who can’t wait:

  • “You will be ineligible to place vehicle reservations or place a sold order with a dealer for certain high-demand models (as identified by GM), including but not limited to future Chevrolet Corvette models.”
  • “The bumper-to-bumper, powertrain, sheet metal, electric vehicle propulsion (E-Ray only), tire and accessory coverages under GM’s new vehicle limited warranty will be voided (this does not include the EV battery warranty coverage, which will not be voided.”

A voided warranty can make owning a high-performance car very expensive, especially given the ZR1’s rarity and cost of parts. It also essentially taints the vehicle for all subsequent owners, as GM’s policy extends beyond the original buyer. That said, a flipped Z06 could be worth it for tuners and shops only concerned with extracting speed and power and not with reliability.
