Everyone in the U.S. auto industry has been chasing Tesla for the top spot in EV sales, with Ford and Hyundai long locked in a battle for second place. General Motors, which owns a handful of brands, has seen impressive EV sales growth, recently propelling it ahead of Ford for the second-place spot.

GM currently has 13 electric models from Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC, and said it had sold more than 62,000 EVs year-to-date through the end of May. The month was GM’s second-best for EV sales, and it recorded 94-percent year-over-year growth in the first quarter of 2025. It also more than doubled its market share in the first two months of the second quarter, climbing to 15.5 percent.

Of course, all of those sales numbers pale in comparison to the volumes seen with gas vehicles, they’re good news for GM, which had previously stepped back from some of its most aggressive electrification plans in favor of more affordable hybrid models. That said, it introduced a significant update for the 2026 Chevy Silverado EV, and the new Cadillac Optiq-V will land late this year.

Rory Harvey, GM’s executive VP and president of global markets, said, “Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles. In the first two months of the second quarter, we more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year.”
