Geely planning new model onslaught in Australia

Geely has just relaunched in Australia with its cut-price EX5 mid-sized electric SUV, and it has plenty more products in the pipeline.

The Chinese carmaker’s namesake brand has confirmed it plans to launch more than six new energy vehicles (NEVs) in Australia over the next three years.

This is confirmation that the Geely brand won’t only sell electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia but will also offer plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).

Geely has confirmed that all the new NEV models will be based on “Geely Global Architecture”. This is likely referencing the GEA platform that already underpins the EX5.

At the brand’s launch event in Sydney last night, the brand announced that its next model will be another SUV as part of a short teaser video.

It appears this next model will be a version of the Geely Galaxy Starship 7, which is a plug-in hybrid version of the EX5. It’s unclear what it’ll be called in Australia yet, nor when it’ll launch exactly.

In other markets, this SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor that is fed by either an 8.5kWh or 19.09kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The entry-level version of the Starship 7 is claimed to be able to travel 55km on electric power, according to lenient CLTC testing, whereas the flagship version of the Starship 7 with the larger battery is claimed to be able to travel up to 120km on electric power.

Beyond the Starship 7, it’s unclear what the other Australia-bound Geely models will be. It’s understood that they will likely be vehicles from the Geely Galaxy brand.

In China, Geely Galaxy also currently offers a range of sedans like the L6 and E8, the L7 small SUV, and LEVC L380 people mover, among other smaller vehicles from the former Geely Geometry brand.

As recently reported, Geely is launching the EX5 in Australia with a starting price of $40,990 before on-roads for the entry-level Complete, and $44,990 before on-roads for the top-spec Inspire.

The EX5 is available now at dealerships, with customer deliveries underway.

In addition to the sharp pricing, Geely is throwing in a few more incentives in until the end of April.

All EX5s sold before then will receive three years of free servicing, one year of free public charging, free premium paint and a free home charger. Geely is also offering a 3.88 per cent comparison rate.
