Ford Trademark Filing Suggests A Mustang Sedan Could Be Incoming

ford trademark filing suggests a mustang sedan could be incoming

Ford purists were wildly upset about the electric Mustang Mach-E, saying the automaker had diluted the brand name by using it on an electric crossover instead of a two-door sports car. The Blue Oval may be poised to rile them up again with a new four-door Mustang sedan, according to a recently filed trademark application.

Ford Authority found the application for the “Mach 4” name, which was filed a few days ago, on February 25. Ford’s application covers “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”

While it could be a controversial move, Ford’s trademark application isn’t a surprise. The automaker has been expected to build a four-door Mustang for years, and the rumor mill has been churning on the subject since before the Mach-E’s rollout for the 2021 model year.

Ford also doesn’t have a sedan on sale in the U.S., so a potential Mustang model in the segment wouldn’t be a massive stretch of the imagination. Last year, CEO Jim Farley said he thought the company could get away with building a four-door Mustang as long as it carries “all the performance and attitude of the original.”

While Ford would likely give the car at least one high-powered gas engine option, it’s just as likely that most Mustang sedan variants come with hybrid or plug-in hybrid power. The good news is that, when done right, those configurations can yield impressive performance while maintaining decent fuel economy.
