Ford is back in the news for another recall. The Blue Oval is clawing back more than a million vehicles for a problem that could cause the backup camera to black out or freeze during operation, making a collision much more likely.
Ford’s recall impacts several models:
- 2021-2024 Bronco
- 2021-2024 Edge
- 2023-2024 Escape
- 2022-2024 Expedition
- 2021-2024 F-150
- 2024 Mustang
- 2021-2023 Mustang Mach-E
- 2024 Ranger
- 2023-2024 Super Duty
- 2022-2025 Transit
- 2023-2024 Lincoln Corsair
- 2021-2023 Lincoln MKX
- 2022-2024 Lincoln Navigator
Due to its production and sales volume, the F-150 comprises more than half of the recalled vehicle population. Just over 100,000 Broncos, almost 140,000 Transits, and more than 150,000 Edge SUVs were also affected.
The recall documentation states that “the center infotainment screen may freeze followed by a black screen and a system reboot. If this occurs during a backing event, the rearview image may be frozen, missing, or delayed.” The problem relates to an “improper sequencing within the wireless communication subsystem of the SYNC software.” Drivers are encouraged not to rely solely on the backup camera for visibility, but many do, making this a relatively serious issue.
The automaker will fix the issue through an over-the-air update, which pushes the software version to level 2.0 and remedies the sequencing issues. While Ford received several reports of the problem, it is unaware of injuries or crashes related to the problem.
