Ford Mustang RTR: Four-cylinder EcoBoost gains drift-friendly package

The four-cylinder Ford Mustang EcoBoost is finally getting some love and attention with the new RTR package that’s been developed by the Blue Oval and drifting world champion Vaughn Gittin Jr.

The Mustang RTR is technically not a new model in the range, but a package that can be optioned on high-spec versions of the base EcoBoost, and mid- and high-spec versions of the EcoBoost Premium in the US.

It borrows parts from higher up the Mustang food chain, including the GT’s front bumper, steering rack, and 600W cooling fan.

Items pilfered from the GT Performance Pack include the rear spoiler, and Brembo brakes with 389mm discs and six-piston calipers up front, and four-piston calipers at the rear.

Meanwhile, the Dark Horse contributes its front and rear stabiliser bars, adjustable strut top mounts, and stiffer rear subframe, all of which are said to make drifting easier for novices.

The RTR isn’t just a parts bin special, though, with unique features like the illuminated grille nostrils and unique exterior graphics package. Eye-catching Hyper Lime is applied to the seat belts, hand brake mechanism, and stitching throughout the cabin.

Buyers may also choose to add Hyper Lime brake calipers and exterior graphics to their cars too. These stand in stark contrast to the black wheels, badges, and mirror caps that come as standard.

While the RTR’s 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine makes the same 235kW and 475Nm as other EcoBoost models, it gains an anti-lag system that keeps the turbo spooled even when the driver lifts off the throttle.

Sadly there’s no manual option, with a 10-speed automatic the only transmission on offer with Ford claiming it meets the “vast majority of customer demand, even in this enthusiast-focused segment”.

The RTR rides on 19-inch alloy wheels, while MagneRide adaptive suspension is an optional extra.

Australian and international availability has yet to be confirmed. The RTR package will be available to US buyers during the second quarter of 2026.

Although Stateside pricing has yet to announced, dealers have told Automotive News it will be around the US$40,000 (A$61,400) mark, placing it between the base EcoBoost at US$32,320 and the entry-level V8 GT at US$46,560.
