Electric Ford F-150 Lightning may live on for a sequel

Despite rumours of Ford axing the F-150 Lightning, evidence unearthed by CarExpert suggests the full-size electric pickup could live on for a second generation.

Information posted on LinkedIn reveals several Ford employees, working out of the company’s headquarters in Michigan, are currently working on a ‘Gen 2 F-150 Lightning’.

The Lightning is expected to join the next-generation F-150 range, slated for release in late 2027 or 2028 – alongside new Super Duty models for the North American market, according to projects listed by Ford employees.

A recent report claimed Ford executives were considering axing the F-150 Lightning due to slow sales and financial losses by the American auto giant – with production paused indefinitely since mid-October following aluminium supply constraints.

However, an end to production may not mean the end of the F-150 Lightning altogether, with development of a new-generation Lightning appearing to be on track at this stage.

But the information regarding future projects listed by employees of the Blue Oval is also no guarantee the company will continue with the electric pickup, given diminishing sales and a potential shift in market sentiment.

General Motors is said to be reconsidering the future of its electric pickups, while Ram recently cancelled development of its pure-electric 1500 REV pickup.

Closing in on almost five decades of being the highest-selling pickup in the US, the new F-150 will mark the 15th generation of the iconic Blue Oval model when it arrives in 2027/28, followed by all-new sixth-generation Super Duty pickups to join the F-Series range by 2029.
