Driver wrecks car in desperate attempt to avoid toll road

A Volkswagen Golf driver made a poorly timed lane change while driving on a Brisbane motorway, and other motorists also ended up paying a price.

Footage uploaded to Dash Cam Owners Australia on Facebook shows afternoon traffic driving eastbound on the M5 motorway, approaching the Legacy Way Tunnel.

Just as the vehicles reach the divide between the toll road and the non-toll road towards Brisbane’s CBD, the Golf driver begins to move their car from the right-hand lane to avoid driving into the tunnel.

However, they made their decision too late, striking the attenuator at the end of the concrete barrier dividing the two roads, causing what appears to be major damage to the hatchback.

Unfortunately, theirs wasn’t the only car damaged, with one commenter on Facebook claiming they hit the rebounding Golf, resulting in their own car being written off.

It’s a heavy price to pay for the Volkswagen’s driver, who would’ve had to pay a relatively insignificant $6.82 to traverse the Legacy Way Tunnel.
