Details of Toyota’s baby LandCruiser emerge – report

The 2026 Toyota LandCruiser FJ – an all-new ‘baby LandCruiser’ that’s expected to compete with the likes of the Suzuki Jimny and Renault Duster – is edging closer to its official unveiling.

Previewed as the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept back in 2022 (pictured above), the production version was revealed in patent images unearthed in June 2025, revealing a small, boxy five-door SUV featuring design cues borrowed from the discontinued FJ Cruiser and other LandCruiser models throughout the nameplate’s history.

It now appears the LandCruiser FJ will launch in Japan in the second quarter of 2026, and the compact off-roader will be powered by a 2.7-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, according to local publication Creative311.

The engine – known internally as the ‘2TR’ – is the same as the one that powers the entry-level HiLux Workmate ute, in which makes 122kW of power and 245Nm of torque.

While it’s not a powerhouse engine by today’s standards, under the bonnet of the Suzuki Jimny is a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that produces just 75kW and 130Nm.

According to the unconfirmed report, Toyota has ruled out using the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine found in the HiLux and LandCruiser Prado due to supply concerns.

Curiously, there’s been no mention of the LandCruiser FJ using the company’s 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, despite the powertrain being offered in the smaller HiLux Champ sold in some southeast Asian markets – and the new FJ said to share the IMV ladder-frame platform of the HiLux and Champ.

At about 4350mm long, the LandCruiser FJ is expected to be longer than the Jimny – at 3820mm – but roughly the same size as the Corolla Cross. But while the Corolla Cross is aimed at those wanting a small crossover SUV with hybrid technology, the FJ will focus on buyers who desire a compact SUV with off-road capability.
