Deepal S09: Chinese brand reveals new three-row Volvo XC90 rival

Just over one month after breaking cover, Deepal’s latest and largest SUV has been shown off to the Chinese public for the first time while a video published online has revealed its interior.

The S09 is an upcoming six-seater SUV from the subsidiary of state-owned Changan Automobile, and was first revealed in December 2024 with a series of official photos published online.

Coinciding with Chinese New Year celebrations, the S09 was subsequently debuted to the public as part of the 2025 CCTV Spring Festival.

Some key preliminary information is now available and it’s expected to be launched in China during the first quarter of this year, with a potential Australian arrival not ruled out.

“Future product that may be available for the Australian market from Deepal globally is of course under consideration for the local market,” a Deepal spokesperson told CarExpert.

Unlike most of Deepal’s overseas lineup, which is offered with both full-electric (EV) and range-extender electric (EREV) powertrains bar the rugged G318 EREV, the S09 will reportedly be sold as only an EREV according to Chinese outlet Autohome.

It’ll reportedly utilise Deepal’s “Blue Whale” HE1.5T hybrid engine with an output of 110kW, paired with electric power in the form of either a single-motor, rear-wheel drive or dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup, with maximum power outputs of up to 362kW.

Its motors will be supplied by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery manufactured by CATL, while the S09 is claimed to be capable of travelling up to 180km on pure electric power.

In any case, the S09 will be a large vehicle to pilot, with measurements quoted at 5205mm long, 1996mm wide, and 1800mm tall atop a 3105mm wheelbase.

For context, a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is up to 5015mm long, 2000mm wide and 1950mm tall on a 2850mm wheelbase.

Helping the driver will be an advanced intelligent driver assistance system developed by Huawei.

Inside is a huge screen panel housing both a standard central infotainment screen and passenger display, while in the middle of the SUV is a sliding centre console.

This console can be moved between the three rows, and inside is a 10-litre temperature-controlled box with a range of -6º to 50º Celsius.

There’s a wireless charging pad on top, and at the back is what appears to be a touchscreen panel to adjust rear climate zone settings.

Like the S07 EV, the S09 appears to have no instrument cluster, suggesting a head-up display could instead feature.

Autohome expects the Deepal S09 will be priced at roughly 350,000 yuan, which corresponds to around A$80,000.

Deepal launched in Australia in late 2024, when its fully electric S07 SUV arrived in local showrooms.

For now, the S07 is its only model Down Under, and it’s available in a single trim priced at $53,900 before on-road costs. However, Deepal has indicated it wants to bring the smaller S05 EV here.
