Deepal E07: China’s ‘Transformer Ute’ coming to Australia

Chinese automaker Deepal has officially announced that its unique electric ‘Transformer SUV/Ute’, the E07, will be launched in the Australian market in the latter half of 2025.

The E07 will join the S07 which is already on sale and the S05 SUV as Deepal expands its product offering in Australia.

Though it would be easy to draw parallels between it and previous vehicles such as the Holden Crewman, the E07 seemingly integrates SUV practicality with pickup utility.

From many angles, the E07 comes across as an elongated SUV featuring a coupe-like roofline and a low belt line. However, the EO7’s rear incorporates a vertical tailgate and an electrically powered retractable cover, enabling a swift transformation into a ute configuration.

This dual-functionality design is unique in the Australian market. While arguably not all that different from a wagon in terms of space (with arguably less), the design and packaging offer a unique proposition that could resonate with local buyers.

In terms of dimensions, the E07 measures 5045mm in length, 1996mm in width, and 1680mm in height, with a substantial wheelbase of 3120mm.

An automated trunk system facilitates the transformation from SUV to pickup mode, allowing owners to switch configurations in approximately 10 seconds.

In SUV mode, there’s 638 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1860 litres in ute mode (with the second-row seats folded flat). The adjustable air suspension provides up to 183mm of ground clearance.

In the Chinese market, the fully electric E07 is offered with rear and all-wheel drive configurations. The RWD variant is equipped with a single permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering 252kW of power and 342Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

Additional performance is available from the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, which adds an asynchronous front motor, increasing the total output to 440kW and 645Nm of torque and achieving a 0 to 100 km/h sprint of just 3.96 seconds.

The RWD tops out at 201km/h while the AWD reaches 210km/h as its top speed.

Both variants are powered by a 89.98kW ternary lithium battery, offering an estimated range of up to 640 kilometres on a single charge for the rear-wheel drive and 590km for the AWD.

The 800V electrical architecture supports fast charging capabilities, allowing the battery to charge at 240kW on a DC fast charger. Strangely, the AC charging speed is capped at 7kW rather than the 11kW we would like to see.

Deepal Australia boss Cormac Cafolla called the E07 a “real game-changer”.

“It’s a unique mix of SUV and mini truck, all wrapped up in a luxury trim for an unbeatable driving experience. I like to call it the automotive multi-tool, one that can take you on mountain trails, drop the kids off at school and still throw all your tools safely in the back,” said Mr Cafolla.

Inside, the Deepal E07 boasts a minimalist yet technologically advanced cabin.

The dashboard features a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, complemented by a head-up display (HUD).

Other features include over the air (OTA) updates, a 50W wireless charger, remote car control, in-car monitoring system, NFC card key and digital key capability.

The “zero-gravity” front seats are designed to take the pressure of the occupants spine during long drives, and come equipped with ventilation and memory settings.

While specific pricing details for the Australian market have yet to be announced, we expect the E07 to be around the $70,000 mark for the base model.
