Colourful luxury brand embraces darkness with Australia-bound special editions

More than many rival brands, Genesis offers a wide range of interior colours in its vehicles and a fairly diverse colour palette including deep greens and bold blues.

Now, however, Genesis is following its rivals in introducing special Black editions.

The G80 Black, GV80 Black and GV80 Coupe Black are due to arrive in Australia during the third quarter (July to September) of 2025.

Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

  • G80 Black

Genesis Australia will confirm pricing and specifications closer to launch, though in Korea these Black editions are offered across all G80, GV80 and GV80 Coupe powertrains.

In Australia, the GV80 and GV80 Coupe are now offered exclusively with a twin-turbo 3.5-litre petrol V6, while the G80 is additionally offered with a turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol four.

A GV70 Black has yet to be revealed globally, but it appears likely to follow given the GV70 was updated recently and is a key model for the brand – it’s Genesis’ best seller in Australia, for example, by a significant margin.

The Black treatment extends beyond merely featuring a black paint finish and black wheels – though the G80 Black and GV80 Black have these, too.

  • GV80 Black

Essentially all exterior trim gets the blackout treatment, including the front grilles, emblems, and window and bumper trim which are all finished in one type of black trim or another.

There are alloy wheels finished in black – 20s for the G80, 22s for the GV80 – behind which sit black brake calipers.

Inside, there’s quilted Nappa leather upholstery in – yep, you guessed it – black, as well as real ash wood inlays finished in black.

  • GV80 Coupe Black

Genesis says the black leather is based on carbon black dye extracted from waste tyres, while some of the other dyes are replaced with natural materials such as pine bark, linseed oil and rapeseed flowers.

Other items, including the aluminium speaker grilles and myriad bezels, switches and controls, are also finished in black.

The GV80 and G80 – and the GV70, for that matter – have been updated recently with minor exterior tweaks and more substantial interior revisions, including a 27-inch display incorporating the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen.

Genesis also offers a Black edition of its flagship, left-hand drive-only G90 sedan overseas, leaving just the GV60, GV70 and G70 without the Black treatment thus far.

The Korean luxury brand has more than just Black editions coming to Australia this year, however.

Updated versions of the Electrified G80 and Electrified GV70 EVs are due here during the second quarter (April to June) of 2025, with the updated GV60 following mid-year and its hot Magma version following in 2026.

In the first quarter of 2025, Genesis sales ticked up slightly by 0.3 per cent compared to the same period last year, with 336 units delivered.

This followed a lacklustre 2024 when deliveries fell by 26.9 per cent year on year, a sharper decline than those experienced by Lexus (down 10.2 per cent) and Audi (down 19.5 per cent).

Genesis’ local boss Justin Douglass blamed the drop in deliveries in part on a revitalisation of its retail network that took some locations out of commission temporarily.

He told CarExpert earlier this year he expects sales to increase this year, with the retail network growing mid-year to include the first Genesis Australia retail location not owned by the brand.

Genesis Castle Hill is opening in partnership with dealer group CKD Automotive, and will be the company’s eighth location nationwide.
