BYD Seal 06 DM-i wagon spotted in Canberra

Lovers of mid-size wagons might want to take a Bex and have a good lie down, because a Reddit user has spotted the BYD Seal 06 DM-i wagon on the streets of Canberra.

While the sedan version of the Seal 06 DM-i was photographed by an alert BYD fan in August, this may be the first confirmed sighting of the wagon on Australian streets.

The car seen here was posted to the CarsAustralia subreddit, and features a matte black wrap over what seems to be a white body underneath.

Inside we can just make out the 15.6-inch rotating infotainment touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard, as well as the smaller 8.8-inch instrumentation screen ahead of the driver.

Neither version of the Seal 06 DM-i have been confirmed for Australia, but the model is being built in right-hand drive, with both body styles set to go on sale in the UK in the not-too-distant future.

The car has been on sale in China since the middle of 2024, where it is available with just one drivetrain with a 74kW/126Nm1.5-litre petrol engine paired, a 120kW/210Nm electric motor, and an e-CVT.

Buyers there can choose from either a 10kWh battery good for around 80km of pure electric driving under the generous CLTC standard, or a larger 16kWh pack that ups EV range to 120km.

Chinese-spec vehicles are available with a chilled bin in the centre console, 18-inch alloy wheels, and vehicle-to-load charging up to 6kW, which allows the car to power appliances.

Measuring 4850mm long, 1890mm wide, 1505mm tall, and riding on a 2790mm wheelbase, the Seal 06 DM-i wagon’s Boot space is rated at 670L with all the seats up, and 1535L with the rear seats down.

The Seal 06 DM-i is around the same size as the Mazda 6 wagon that left our shores at the beginning of the year.

Whereas the electric-only Seal sedan rides on an EV-specific architecture, the Seal 06 utilises a different platform. Compared to the Seal sedan, the Seal 06 DM-i wagon is 50mm longer, 15mm wider, 45mm taller, but has a 130mm shorter wheelbase.

If the Seal 06 DM-i does make its way Down Under, it will give some extra life to a market segment which once teemed with life and was dominated by the likes of the Mitsubishi Magna, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6.

Now, though, the mainstream field has been reduced to just the Skoda Superb.
