Two young males were nabbed speeding at more than 200km/h on the same section of Hume Freeway at Mittagong, New South Wales within a 24-hour period over the Easter long weekend.

The first was a 22-year-old who produced an international licence after he was detected travelling at 202km/h on a 110kmh-signposted stretch known as ‘The Dipper’ at 3:35pm on Easter Sunday (April 20).

“Checks revealed he has continuously resided in New South Wales for 2 years and was currently on a student visa,” said the NSW Police Force on its Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Facebook page.

The student was detected by the Traffic Response Group using LiDAR while travelling north in lane three of three in what appears to be a debadged Holden Commodore SS police car.

He was issued a Court Attendance Notice to attend Moss Vale Local Court on the May 27 for offences including driving at a speed and in a manner dangerous to the public, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, and driving with privileges withdrawn.

At the same location early the following morning (Monday, April 21) at 6:55am, Mittagong Highway Patrol officers conducting stationary speed enforcement as part of Operation Easter 2025 detected an 18-year-old man travelling at no less than 238km/h.

He was the sole occupant of a distinctive Ford Mustang Bullitt, a limited-edition V8 coupe designed to commemorate the 1968 Steve McQueen film of the same name. Just 700 examples were released in Australia in 2018.

The teenager produced an Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Provisional P2 licence but was not displaying P-plates, although he did pass roadside alcohol and drug tests.

The Highland Green-painted Mustang was confiscated and towed to a police holding yard at his expense.

The man’s driving privileges were withdrawn until he appears in court to face charges of driving at a dangerous speed and exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h.

“The speed of being 128kmh over the sign posted limit, and his minimal driving experience makes this incident a significant and dangerous risk to public safety,” said NSW Police.
