BMW Z4 Final Edition confirms Toyota Supra cousin’s demise

The BMW Z4 Final Edition has been unveiled, confirming the end of production of the current-generation sports car in March 2026 after almost eight years on sale.

The news was widely anticipated after the axing of the Toyota Supra – essentially a restyled version of the Z4 made on the same production line in Austria – was confirmed in August 2025.

Toyota Australia stopped taking orders for the GR Supra, codenamed A90, in the same month with a Supra Final Edition limited to 300 units being globally revealed in November.

BMW has confirmed the Z4 Final Edition, like the Supra Final Edition, won’t be offered in Australia, adding another commonality between the two sports cars.

The swansong for the current ‘G29’ Z4 will share its name with the last Supra, with orders for the Z4 Final Edition opening in January 2026, only weeks before the end of production for both cars.

The Final Edition isn’t a specific model but rather a treatment that can be applied to any Z4, so long as the vehicle has the M Sport pack fitted. This means it can be had with either four- or six-cylinder engines.

Finished in exclusive Frozen Matt black paintwork – although buyers can choose other colours from the BMW palette – the Z4 Final Edition runs contrasting red high-gloss red brake calipers and high-gloss ‘Shadowline’ exterior trim as standard.

The red details extend to the cabin, where colourful stitching visually ties the dash, console and door trims together.

There’s little else to distinguish the last batch of the sports car, which costs €4200 ($7500) on top of the standard price, which in Australia ranges from $103,400 to $142,700 before on-road costs.

While BMW hasn’t confirmed a successor to the Z4, which has been made across its three generations since 2002, Toyota may bring a new Supra to showrooms as soon as 2027.

Reports from Japan suggest a next-generation Supra will be introduced with a 373kW hybrid powertrain, shading the outgoing petrol model’s most potent 320kW tune, reserved for the Final Edition.

Toyota is also set to reintroduce the Celica name to a new sports car, after Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda confirmed the plans to media in late 2024.

In December 2025, Toyota will reveal its hotly anticipated GR GT sports car which is expected to use a hybrid V8 powertrain.
