Our AutoHunter Spotlight for the day is a very special vehicle. Sure, 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupes are practically a dime a dozen, but this is one of the rarified few equipped with fuel injection. Chevrolet offered fuel injection in two states of tune, with this particular example equipped with the superior of the two, which was rated at 283 horsepower—that’s one horsepower per cubic-inch. The numbers-matching 283ci small-block is paired to a three-speed manual transmission. Finished in Onyx Black over a red and black vinyl and cloth interior, this finned ’57 comes from the selling dealer with a vehicle history binder (including original sales documents and handwritten correspondence from original owner) and a clear title.
The original Onyx Black hue was repainted by the original owner in the 1990s. Other exterior features include longitudinal chrome trim, anodized aluminum rear fender trim, chrome rocker panel trim, gold anodized aluminum Bel Air and Chevrolet nameplates, fuel injection and crossed flag medallions, front bumper bullets, and twin rockets on the hood. A set of 14-inch steel wheels with chrome wheel covers are wrapped in Coker Classic 205/75 whitewall radials.
The cabin features red vinyl upholstery with black and red pattern cloth. Interior features include split front bench seat, padded dashboard, clock, Wonderbar AM radio, and heater. An interesting trinket is a plaque from the Southern California Timing Association that shows this vehicle was timed at 135.95 miles per hour at Bonneville.
The instrument panel consists of a 120-mph speedometer, and gauges for the coolant temperature and fuel. The odometer currently reads 88,762, though the title reads mileage-exempt.
The Rochester fuel-injected 283ci V8 has been bored 30-over as part of a 2020 rebuilt. As the top engine in the Chevrolet lineup, this small-block also features a high-lift camshaft, 905 distributor, and air scoop. A rebuilt, column-mounted three-speed manual was the only transmission available from the factory with this engine.
The undercarriage features drum brakes at all four corners. A dual exhaust system routs emissions to twin pipes below the rear bumper. Seller says a NOS master cylinder has been installed, as well as new brakes.
Once one of the kings of 1950s collectibles, the 1957 Chevrolet has been forced to share the space with several other upstarts. However, when equipped with fuel injection, the ’57 Chevy still continues to stand tall and remain one of the giants of the hobby.
