Audi A6 reveal date set: 5 Series, E-Class rival sticking with classic name

The replacement for the Audi A6, set to be revealed within days, will be called… the Audi A6.

As previously confirmed, Audi has walked away from its strategy to move combustion-powered vehicles to odd-number nameplates.

That means the replacement for today’s A6 Sedan and A6 Avant won’t adopt the A7 nameplate to differentiate them from the mechanically unrelated, electric A6 e-tron.

Audi has confirmed it’ll reveal the new A6 – at least in Avant form – on March 4, 2025.

It comes almost five decades after the launch of the Audi 100 Avant, which transitioned from a hatchback to a wagon before eventually being rechristened the A6 Avant in 1994.

The company has released a single teaser image of the vehicle under a cover, showing its full-width rear light bar and rather 3D-like LED internals in its tail lights.

While the A6 replacement won’t be renamed A7, it’s unclear if the latter nameplate will live on. The current A7 is a swoopier liftback counterpart to the A6, though in China it subsequently spawned a sedan version called the A7L.

The new A6 won’t offer electric power – that’s being left for the A6 e-tron – and will instead likely continue with just petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Replacements for the current turbo V6-powered S6 and twin-turbo V8 RS6 performance models are also expected, the latter rumoured to be gaining plug-in hybrid assistance like the rival BMW M5.

It’s unclear if there will be a replacement for the current A6 allroad, a higher-riding, more rugged-looking version of the A6 Avant.
