Surprisingly, Toyota changed the plug-in Prius’ name in 2025, moving away from the long-running “Prime” nomenclature it had leaned on for years, but the car’s 2026 changes will look familiar to anyone who has followed the brand’s recent vehicle updates. Toyota recently introduced the 2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Nightshade Edition, which brings blacked-out styling to the now-sleek PHEV.
The Nightshade Edition builds on the XSE trim with black exterior trim pieces, including badges, door sills, and handles. It rides on exclusive 19-inch black wheels, and buyers can choose from three colors: Karashi (bright yellow), Wind Chill Pearl (white), and Midnight Black Metallic.
Powertrain details didn’t change with the new model year. The car retains its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, which make a combined 220 horsepower and offer up to 40 miles of all-electric range in the XSE trim. The base SE trim delivers a slightly more impressive 44-mile range due to its smaller wheel size. Charging the Prius Plug-In Hybrid takes about 11 hours on a home power outlet and up to four hours on a Level 2 charger.
Inside, the Nightshade brings synthetic leather upholstery with red accent stitching, carbon fiber accents, and heated front seats. An 8-inch touchscreen comes standard, running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Toyota hasn’t priced the 2026 Nightshade Edition yet, but pricing for the base SE trim starts at $33,775. More details are expected ahead of the car’s launch this summer.
