Another day, another car stuck on ‘road’ notorious for stranding vehicles

South Australian police have charged two teenagers who stole a Ford Mustang and subsequently got stuck on the Adelaide O-Bahn, a ‘road’ intended only for buses.

At approximately 6:00am today (April 2), police received reports of the Mustang being stolen from a home in Rosslyn Park, and later spotted the sports coupe travelling out of Bute around 11:15am and then again on the Copper Coast Highway that goes through to Port Wakefield.

Police set up cordons around the area and a PolAir helicopter detected it driving through Two Wells, Virginia and the city’s northern suburbs.

However, the joyride came to an end at 12:45pm, when the Mustang drove onto the O-Bahn track at Tea Tree Plaza then travelled south for about 2km, before becoming stuck near Welloch Street, Modbury.

The two teenagers – aged 19 and 14 – ran from the car but were arrested shortly after.

At the time of writing, the O-Bahn remains closed until the vehicle can be removed via crane.

It’s far from the first time a vehicle has driven onto the O-Bahn and become stuck, requiring assistance to be freed.

Satirical website The Adelaide Mall has a running ‘O-Bahn Counter’ which resets every time a vehicle becomes stuck on the busway. This is the 10th recorded time it’s happened.

The most recent incident-free streak had run of 108 days, while the shortest time between strandings was 28 days.

In December last year, an elderly motorist drove onto the tracks in their Hyundai Getz, also at the Tea Tree Plaza interchange.
